The CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML) is a premier establishment of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi. CSIR-NML pursues research in diverse areas ranging from mineral processing, extractive metallurgy, alloy/materials design and development, corrosion and surface engineering, computational materials science, structural integrity and remaining life assessment, life cycle assessment and cleaner and sustainable metals production.

It carries out R&D in the areas of:

Mineral Processing: Agglomeration, Coal & Iron Ore, Petrography.

Extractive Metallurgy: Hydro-Biometallurgy, Pyrometallurgy, Electrometallurgy, Process Modelling.

Surface Engineering: Corrosion, Tribology, Surface Modification.

Applied and Analytical Chemistry: Surface and Water Chemistry.

Materials Engineering and Evaluation: Physical and Mechanical Metallurgy, Alloy Development, Microstructural Characterization, Materials Mechanics, Metal Forming and Joining, Non-destructive Evaluation, Materials Modeling.

Advanced Materials and Processing: Nanomaterials, Magnetic Materials, Biomimetic and Biomaterials.

Energy & Environment: Waste Processing and Utilization, Metal Recycling, Life Cycle Assessment.
