Adikavi Nannaya University, established in March 2006 through the Government of Andhra Pradesh Act No. 28 of 2006 at Rajahmundry is a unique addition to the existing universities in India. Named after Nannaya, the eleventh century poet laureate hailed as Adikavi of Telugu literature in much the same way as is Valmiki for Sanskrit literature, the university aims to entwine pristine glory and the contemporary demands of educational excellence together. Nannaya initiated a freeway authentic translation of the great epic Mahabharat from Sanskrit to Telugu. The city of Rajahmundry is a cultural, literary and historical bastion of coastal Andhra. Known as Rajamahendravaram historically, the city was the capital of the Eastern Chalukya King Ammiraju Vishnu Vardhana and later the great Raja Raja Narendra for whom Nannaya was the court poet.
