Community Radio is a new concept in India but this form of participatory communication has proved to be very successful as a tool for social development at the grassroots level in many countries like Australia, Latin America, Africa and closer to our borders in Sri Lanka. Community Radio utilizes the desire of every individual to communicate. Its strength lies in its ability to involve a wide cross section of the members of the communities living within the transmission zone and through the broadcasts project the needs and aspirations of the people. Due to its close range of broadcast, community radio programmes are usually made in the local dialects, often neglected by mainstream media and commercial channels. The main challenge of community radio lies in the understanding of community needs and ensuring inclusiveness of all sections within the communities and making the community active partner in all aspects of running the station. More than 30 community radio stations are already functional in different parts of India and have started regular broadcast . Permission for starting community radio has already been granted to another 91 organizations. As the idea of using community radio starts getting popular it is also time to understand how this powerful tool for social development should be used, its potential optimally utilized and how it can be transformed into a tool for the overall development in the communities. With this in view, the Indira Gandhi National Open University invite papers from all practitioners and academicians aware of the function and potential of community radio to suggest how this communication tool should be tailored to be more focused in Indian contexts of social development.
